Space Coast Eats: Josh, the Fat Angel Shares Eats on the StreetsMay 4, 2020#GiveBack / SCEatsSpace Coast Eats latest podcast (04/30/20) features a fellow podcaster, Josh. He shares with Jesse and I a very cool new endeavor. Josh saw a need in our homeless and excess of food that would potentially go to waste. He connected the dots finding a solution for both. In doing so, he became The Fat Angel. With the closing of schools due to Covid-19, there was abundance of food within the public school system. At the same time, The Space Coast continues to see an increase in homelessness. Once The Fat Angel, recognized this he found a solution. He became the solution. Providing these excess school lunch and more to our homeless became his mission. He began seeking them out. In doing so, he also found that he has a genuine interest in their stories. Cocktails For A CauseNovember 24, 2019#GiveBack / Eat + DrinkBeing thankful for the blessings in one’s life no matter how small or large can be a challenge for some people. I believe if you continue to see, I mean really see those who are less fortunate both in life circumstance, health and finances you will find joy in your life. You will find joy in taking a minute in time to show a bit of kindness. As the holidays are here in full swing, there are so many opportunities to give back and have a little holiday fun while doing it! Mainstreet Pub and Jim Beam hosted Cocktails For A Cause this weekend. A Bourbon Tasting in their bar upstairs. Truth be told, I am not a big bourbon drinker. But I live with one who likes a very fine bourbon and is well schooled on the liquor. But I am always one to join in the fun, especially for a good cause. All of the proceeds of Cocktails For A Cause went to a local charity, Kids Without Christmas. As I mentioned, I am not a big Bourbon drinker. So, please do not take this blog post as a suggestion from a bourbon aficionado. However, our first round of Basil Hayden’s line I did find a few that were smooth as silk. The Basil Hayden’s Dark Rye was full of flavor on the back of the tongue and was quite the sipper! Is that a thing? I also really enjoyed the Manhattan which I had actually never tried. This is what is so great about tastings, no big commitment. Now I know that if I get the chance to order a Manhattan while in Manhattan, it will be for the cocktail and not just because I think it’s very cool. While this was such a great night of fun in our little Downtown Melbourne catching up with friends, getting the down and dirty details on each of our tastings it was about making sure a very local charity had a little extra cha ching this holiday season. If you are interested in giving or more information in Kids Without Christmas, you can email them at kidswithoutchristmas@yahoo.com. We are also huge fans of the Mainstreet Pub’s food, excellent craft cocktails, and the jams in their outdoor tiki bar. The fact that they gave all of the proceeds to this event is superb! #GiveBack this holiday season and all year long! Giving Back: Colossal Cookies, Colossal HeartsSeptember 10, 2019#GiveBackThe last several weeks have been quite the roller coaster for us here on the Space Coast, am I right? Our preparation for a potential direct hit from a Category 4 hurricane began massive preparation. We stocked up on supplies, snacks for days just to wait for the hurricane that equated to not much more than a big afternoon storm in the Sunshine State. I have also heard the term, “we dodged a bullet” and that we did, my friends! Unfortunately, our island neighbors were not so lucky. The Bahamas suffered tremendously for hours. Many of them lost loved ones, hearth, and home. They look around them and see nothing but devastation and probably wonder if there is life after Dorian. Our amazing friends with the most delicious colossal cookies also have colossal hearts! Nin Nin’s Farmhouse Bakery quickly joined forces with Alluvionic Inc in a team effort to get supplies quickly to the Grand Cay Abacos Islands. Nin Nin’s Bakery began pushing out through their social media that they would be accepting donations at their location. They notated what to bring and what not to bring. This coordinated effort included boat and air delivery of supplies nearly daily. We took our own bag of donations up on Saturday morning just as they were loading the truck for a delivery that day. At Eat Drink Play Brevard, we believe it’s important to give back where your heartstrings tug. The recovery in the Bahamas is going to be a marathon and not a sprint, continue to keep donations coming if that is where your heartstrings tug. If you would like to find out more about this particular drop off location, please contact Nin Nin’s Farmhouse Bakery and do not forget your colossal cookie before you shut the front door! #GiveBack Related posts: #GiveBackBrevard Focus On Our Community Who Gives Back To Who? Cocktails For A Cause... Who Gives Back To Who?May 16, 2019#GiveBackIt’s Happening! It’s happening! That’s what I say to Macey when we pull up into the parking lot at Bethesda on Turkey Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care! “It’s happening” is just one of my favorite things that I have always said to her when something exciting is about to happen and she knows it. When she hears “it’s happening”, she goes crazy! The funny thing about Macey is that she is a smart chick. She doesn’t need me to say a word when we pull up into the parking lot at Bethesda. The girl is already going bonkers to get out of the car and hang out with her new friends! She also gets this excited when we are sitting in the Starbucks drive-thru and she knows that a Puppaccino is coming her way. This is the opposite when we pull into the parking lot of the vet. She will refuse to get out of the car. I can say, “it’s happening” all day long and she knows that I that is a big fat lie! Who Gives Back To Who? Her sheer excitement to get in the door and their joy when they see her on Wednesday mornings leads one to ask themselves, who gives back to who? At Eat Drink Play Brevard, we decided to focus on the everyday givebacks and recognizing people in our everyday lives. Choosing to visit the residents at Bethesda on Turkey Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care on a weekly basis is a big day for Macey! She visits each resident including those on the memory care side. I cannot express how important this is for many of these residents. Connecting with an animal has been shown to be healthy for seniors. They can alleviate depression, loneliness, and feelings of isolation. Interaction with an animal for memory care patients can also reduce stress and anxiety. Focus On Our CommunityApril 20, 2019#GiveBackWhen Eat Drink Play Brevard was in conception mode, I knew that one of the elements had to focus on our community and the people. While I want to explore everything that is super fun, delish, cool, and unique about living on the Space Coast. It was important to not ignore the people who live here, all the people who live here. As we focus on our community, we are excited that we are going to be working with Bethesda on Turkey Creek Assisted Living. Seniors will always have a very special place in my heart. Along with the staff of Bethesda on Turkey Creek. The care and love that they provided my Dad as he suffered and succumbed to Dementia will not be taken for granted. Eat Drink Play Brevard will be giving back to their residents. I strongly feel that our elderly population who has long since lost the spring in their steps have not lost that spring in their hearts. They still feel young on the inside. They still have the desire to connect, interact, build friendships, and feel loved and important to someone. The sad thing is that many don’t. They live with depression and loneliness. This Easter I made little Easter cups with goodies for each resident, with love. As Easter approaches and every day thereafter; look beyond the wrinkles, the canes, the memory lapses and love the person who is hidden inside. They have incredible stories to share and love to give. They may bless your life more than you bless theirs. #GiveBack Related posts: #GiveBackBrevard Who Gives Back To Who? Giving Back: Colossal Cookies, Colossal Hearts... #GiveBackBrevardMarch 19, 2019#GiveBackWhen most people think about giving back to their communities, they think about donating to charities or dropping pockets of spare change in the bucket outside of their local Publix during the holiday season. It just makes them feel like they are doing something. It gives them a little happiness in the heart because they are contributing to society and the less fortunate. Do not get me wrong, this is fabulous. I would never discourage anyone to stop with these types of “givebacks” So keep them these coming! We actually need more of them. The Everyday “Givebacks” I think we miss everyday givebacks. We walk through life and our days without looking at people around us. I am referring to the total stranger, the guy in front of you at the WaWa buying cigarettes. When we do look at them, are you even seeing them or maybe judging them? Judging their clothes, their lifestyle? Are we deciding that they are a terrible Mom because their child is a hellraiser in the Target aisle, giving her a look of condemnation and whispering something rude? Let’s not forget the lady with the Louis Vuitton bag that just cut you off in line. You assume that she thinks that she is clearly entitled. Now you want to literally want to punch her in the face. How about that grouchy old man standing in the street screaming and pointing his crooked old man finger at you for taking his parking spot, even when you didn’t. He is just a crazy loon so you laugh him off, giving him the finger and head into the restaurant anyway. Not What It Seems Does it ever cross your mind that these people have more going on behind the scenes in their lives? Maybe the Mom is having a really bad day? Maybe she just got laid off of her job and her child did not get a nap. Her only goal at the moment is to get a few rolls of toilet paper and a frozen pizza. Her day is really really bad and the looks of condemnation and whispers have sent her to her minivan for a good long hard cry. The uptight lady with the Louis who cut you off has no excuses, right? Maybe she cut you off because she is taking care of her Dad with dementia and she is very scared to leave him alone too long. She knows that she was rude, but she is dying on the inside and is very afraid and very alone and the stress in her life is like nothing you are able to comprehend. Little did you know, the crazy old guy outside in the street that is yelling at you is the entitled Louis Vuitton carrying ladies Dad. Is Stalking Ok? For me, there are days when I look for someone to share kindness with in an effort to #GiveBack, I look for someone who looks like they are having a bad day or are lonely. The days that I do this are typically days when I am feeling not so amazing. I sometimes will stalk people in the grocery store to pay for their groceries. I often see elderly people in the grocery store parking lot who clearly do not seem like they have a lot of money. I think of my own Dad living alone, going to Publix and buying food on a fixed income. It makes them happy to be “seen”, but it makes me even happier. Show kindness and give back to your everyday human. I promise it will put joy in your heart.
